Practice IQ - Relative Value Units
This article answers frequently asked questions regarding Relative Value Units (RVU) within Practice IQ
Overview
The Relative Value Units (RVU) is a standardized measure of provider work assigned to each procedure code by CMS. The RVU Dashboard within PracticeIQ provides a breakdown of your total work output for a selected period by the procedure codes billed.
By default, the dashboard displays data for the current month and is based on posting date (i.e. not the charge date of service). Data is refreshed at different times depending on the billing system used. Data is either refreshed nightly with data through the prior day, or the data is current and updated in real-time as charges and payments are posted. As a result, current-month data will continue to change.
Once a reporting period has fully closed, prior month data is considered final and should not change. This ensures consistency and reliability when reviewing historical performance.
FAQ
How do I interpret the RVUs by code for the month?
The stacked bar chart shows RVUs earned each day, color-coded by code, so you can see both your daily volume and which services are driving it. The table below the chart lists each code with its full description, total RVUs, and its share of your overall output, giving you a clear picture of where your productivity is concentrated.
What is the value of each RVU?
RVUs account for the time, skill, and intensity required to perform a service per CMS guidelines. Rather than measuring revenue directly, RVUs reflect your clinical productivity, making them a useful tool for comparing output across providers, facilities, or time periods regardless of what a payer ultimately reimburses.
What does the percentage column signify?
The percentage next to each code represents that code's share of your total RVUs for the selected period. For example, if a code shows 53.7%, it means that code alone accounts for more than half of all the work units generated. This helps you quickly identify your highest-volume services and understand the makeup of your overall productivity at a glance.
When is monthly RVUs considered final?
Monthly data is finalized by the 10th of the following month. Until that date, figures for the prior month may still be subject to minor changes. For reporting or decision-making purposes, we recommend waiting until after the 10th to treat a prior month as closed.
How do I know the RVU data is accurate?
Claimocity has multiple checks and balances around the charge capture process to ensure the data in your dashboard is reliable. Since RVUs are a direct reflection of encounter volume and complexity, verifying the encounter effectively validates the associated RVUs.
Who do I contact if I have questions or concerns regarding my RVU data?
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your RVU data, please reach out to your Account Manager or Customer Success Manager. Depending on your account, you may have one or both of these contacts available, and they will be able to assist you or direct your inquiry to the appropriate resource.
Why does my RVUs appear low?
RVU totals can appear lower for several reasons, the most common being that the current month is still in progress and data continues to build as charges are processed daily. Additionally, RVU volume naturally reflects patient visit volume, so periods with lower census, holidays, or staffing changes will show lower output. If you have specific concerns, your Account Manager or Customer Success Manager can help review your data in more detail.
What is the difference between "Practice" and "Provider" view?
The toggle in the top-right corner lets you switch between two perspectives. Practice view shows RVUs across your entire group. Provider view breaks down RVUs by the individual provider you are authenticated in the App session as. Please Note: Practice view is only viewable for users with the 'Practice Owner' role user setting.
How do I change the date range I'm looking at?
By selecting the ‘Current Month’ icon/field, you can switch to other preset periods (current week, current year, las month, etc.) or select ‘Custom’ where the calendar will appear to select a custom date range. The chart, summary cards, and detail table will all update to reflect whichever period you choose.
What do the filters do?
The filters (Provider, Facility, Code group, and Code) let you drill into a specific slice of your RVUs. For example, you can filter to a specific Code group, such as Initial Hospital Care, to see RVUs by that category of service.
What determines the Code group?
Code groups are categories that bundle related procedure codes together, for example, grouping all Initial Hospital Care codes or all Nursing Facility codes under a single label. These groupings follow standard CMS and billing conventions and are used to help you analyze productivity by service type rather than individual code.
What are the two summary cards on the right side?
The top card shows your Total RVUs for the selected period alongside the total from the previous comparable period (e.g., this month vs. last month). The bottom card shows your Average RVU per Day for same prior-period comparison. Together they give you a quick read on whether your productivity is trending up or down.
How do RVUs relate to my revenue?
RVUs measure the work performed, revenue reflects what was actually collected for that work. They move together directionally but are not the same number. Payer contracts, adjustments, and reimbursement rates all affect how RVUs ultimately translate into dollars collected.
